So we got another animal. People must think we are crazy, I never imagined being this way..I always figured id have one or two dogs..that's it, not even a cat.
About 8 or 9 years ago I had a boyfriend that would take me to his friends lake house. The friends house belonged to a fabulous family who happened to have a black rabbit named heart. I loved taking that little rabbit out! My boyfriend asked my mom if he could get me a rabbit for my 18 birthday....of course she said no lol.
So we go to the pet store a lot just to look at the animals and pick up dog food or Guinea pig food. We always go through all the rooms birds, reptiles, fish, cats, small mammals. I always in particular have looked at the rabbits. Finally a few days ago i found the cutest little one ever! It's a harquin lop ear rabbit. He's still a baby about 2 months old. I watched people come in and out of that room looking at him and commenting on how adorable he was. So an employee that was helping me look at a green iguana earlier just for the fun of it came in and asked if I wanted him out. He just came in and was extremely popular for his coat and demeanor. I called robbie told him I found my bday present got the hutch and came home :). I'm currently working on litter training him. Well see how it goes...so that puts our count up to 11.

Is it a lot of work-
Not really we got a routine down.. With the puppy now it's a little more hectic
Is it expensive-
About 100 a month. Most is dog food at 45 then bedding hay and small mammal food
The dragons are free-cockroach diet
The produce is free for cockroaches, dragons and small mammals thanks to work :)
Does it get stinky or dirty-
If the cage wouldn't get cleaned I'm sure it would.. Guinea pigs get a full clean once every two weeks
Mouse once a month about
Bunny just wipe down and trade newspaper out in the morning
Robbie takes care of the reptiles..they are pretty low matience
How are the animals with kids-
Good! They are supervised so. Also my children have learned proper handling for each pet..including roaches, no scorpion for them lol.
Do I regret it-
Nope! The girls love them so it's worth the work. If I were to buy in the future I would pick rabbits over pigs..cleaner less work and about the same personality..rabbit is less jumpy. But for the age they are at the pigs are perfect friends.
The mice will probably have their last round with this one..we have had 5 die on us..per store says it's normal they are feeder mice but we have one survivor! It's sad for the girls but it helps explain the idea of death.

wow baby! i was just asking your dad while he was out here how many you guys have now. he told us how nahla told him that the mice went 'in a box to Jesus' haha! well, it seems like more work than i'd be willing to do, so i hope you get paid double time on weekends and holidays ;) how do you get someone to watch them when you go on vacation? and we can't wait to visit the zoo when we come out there! :)
ReplyDeleteHaha yes lots of our mice have met their maker. We have a family member stay the the house, usually it's Robbie's brother Tyler who's a fabulous babysitter sparky loves him. I'm hoping he will still be around in September..he's thinking he's leaving for his mission in Oct. I usually have my mom and dad watch the pigs or have some of the young girls in church watch them while we are gone ! They love it!
