The CREATURE from the Black Lagoon

This movie is OLD! Black and white in fact. Robbie and I watched it last night. When the opening credits came on robbie was shocked. It was rated G. He said "I haven't seen a rated G movie since i was like 10 do they still make them anymore?!" With a little baby you would think we watch a lot of rated G movies. Nahla has seen 101 Dalmations, (a personal favorite of mine) but she has never seemed overly interested. Shes still to little.

Now the reason why I added it to my Netflix in the first place was because of my dad. This movie is not scary, obviously. He recommended it because of the technology invented to make this movie.
They did use a lot of backdrops for this movie, you could easily see that, and if i couldnt robbie made sure i knew of it. He said he couldn't even imagine that people used to watch such poor quality movies! He was getting frustrated by the lack of green screens and computer animation. On the other hand i was amazed. This wasn't anything compared to movies today, but it didnt look like it was shot in someones bathtub either. The biggest amazment to me was the creatures costume. (This is what my dad had explained to watch for) They shot the scenes underwater and made a scuba tank that could fit underneath the actors suit. You couldn't see the scuba tank at all! They even made the gills on the costume "breathe". Sure the monster looked like a human in a costume, which is why it was probably rated G, but they did a great job. To be honest ive seen worse horror movies from this decade. I'm sure robbie would disagree with me here since he hated it.
It had a good story line. It kept my attention. It was entertaining. I must mention the love interest of the creature, the female scientist, had about 16 costume changes in the two days they spent in the lagoon. I wonder how she fit all of her suitcases on the boat. It seemed a little weird. While im speaking about the female scientist ill talk about the cultural differences. She is completely helpless. She doesn't ever try to fight the monster that keeps grabbing her and the men keep sending her away to her cabin when things get a little too wild or scary. I would be punching that monster in the face, not crying in the corner or going to my cabin to change my outfit when the situation got a bit hairy.
Robbie commented about how none of the men were buff. They were hairy and a bit flabby. This would normally be a disapointment to me except i considered the fact that in 2010 these movies stars are old and wrinkly. Those men would never be able to star in a movie today, they were in their swimsuits 90% of the time. They would need to be waxed and given a gym membership before they were even considered. I guess girls back then didnt have very high expectations.

I give this movie a 3 out of 5. Its corny, but entertaining. Its more of a comedy then a horror..although its not meant to be.
